All About Alba
The actress discusses balancing Hollywood stardom, motherhood, and eco-friendly diapers
She’s battled Doctor Doom…taken down an evil timekeeper…mesmerized Machete and battled an underworld with her awesome abs…but the most challenging and rewarding role for the gorgeous Jessica Alba is definitely being a mother.
We chatted with the action-loving actress about balancing motherhood and a Hollywood career, her must-try beauty secrets, and her super successful eco-friendly baby product company.
You co-founded The Honest Co., which creates safe, non-toxic, and eco-friendly baby products. What was your inspiration?
When I was pregnant with Honor, I read the book, Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home by Christopher Gavigan and learned about toxic chemicals in everyday products like baby shampoo, diapers, home furnishings, and household cleaners. Needless to say, I was shocked and upset.
So, I spent hours and hours researching products and trying to shop around the problem — even shopping in Europe, Canada, and Australia. I’d shell out way more money for the products in brown packaging and pictures of nature…only to get home and find out the brown diapers I just bought still had ingredients in them I was trying to avoid. And the few products that were really safer never seemed to work as well as I needed. Effectiveness and performance are important to moms! It was beyond frustrating. So, I created Honest.com because, as a mom, I needed and wanted it, and wanted someone to do it better. Turns out, a lot of other parents did, too.
You look so amazing — we just can’t believe that you’ve had kids! Have your workouts changed since becoming a mom? And we mean seriously — how did you lose the weight?
The main thing that’s changed is that I’m always moving now! As every mom realizes, you just don’t stop when you’re chasing around after a toddler and lifting a baby! Beyond that, the main reason I think I was able to get back into shape so quickly after having Haven is that I ate healthier, did more activities like yoga when I was pregnant, and tried my best to achieve a balanced outlook and lifestyle.
What’s the one beauty product you cannot live without?
When I have those late nights up with my girlfriends, concealer is a mom must-have. For every day, an eyelash curler (but I only use mascara if my eyes look puffy or tired). Also, everyone should try our Honest Healing Balm, for hands, face, lips, everywhere — it’s great.
